When planning a trip to Grand Cayman, one question that comes up a lot is whether or not to rent a car. We have been three times now, and the answer is yes — every time. Staying at a single resort or beach is fine, but having a car opens up the whole island. Some links in this article are Amazon affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission if you buy through them at no extra cost to you.
This is one piece of our broader Grand Cayman planning approach. If you are still working through flights, where to stay, and itinerary shape, start with our Grand Cayman trip planning hacks.
Explore multiple beaches and snorkeling spots
Grand Cayman has an incredible range of beaches and snorkeling spots, each with its own character. From Seven Mile Beach to the secluded shores of Rum Point and the incredible snorkeling at Smith’s Barcadere, you need a car to see them all. Hopping from one spot to another is half the fun.
Freedom to discover hidden gems
Places like Starfish Point, Spotts Beach, and the East End offer quieter, less crowded experiences that you will not find near the main tourist hubs. A rental car gives you the freedom to explore these off-the-beaten-path locations at your own pace.
Driving is easy and safe
Driving on the left side of the road might sound intimidating, but in Grand Cayman it is a breeze. The roads are well-maintained, local drivers are polite and patient, and signage is clear. You will get the hang of it quickly.
Affordable rental options
Rental cars are relatively inexpensive, especially if you use a credit card that provides rental car insurance. This can save a significant amount compared to purchasing insurance directly from the rental company. Confirm your credit card’s coverage and terms before you go.
Taxis are very expensive
Taxis are readily available but can be very expensive, especially if you are planning to explore multiple locations. Taxi fares add up quickly, making a rental car the more cost-effective option by far.
All beaches are free
Unlike some destinations where the best beaches come with a price tag, all beaches in Grand Cayman are free and open to the public. You can enjoy the pristine sands and clear waters of even the most luxurious resort beaches without spending a dime. With a rental car, you can visit multiple beaches in a day.
Experience the full island
From the lively atmosphere of Seven Mile Beach to the tranquil beauty of the North Side, each area has something special. Cultural attractions in George Town, natural wonders like the Crystal Caves, and swimming with wild turtles at Spotts Beach are all within easy reach with a car.
Bonus: booking tips
When booking a rental car in Cayman, it pays to make direct contact with the office on the island. Often “prebooked” quotes do not include all the insurance and fees you thought they did. We typically find some prices on Kayak, then email the top three rental companies and ask them to provide a detailed quote including all prices and fees. Many credit cards do not cover international rentals, so if you are going that route, confirm yours does.
While you are here: gear worth packing
If you are heading to Grand Cayman, snorkel gear and an underwater camera are two of the best things you can bring. Renting gear daily adds up fast, and phone cases do not work well underwater.

Our bottom line
While it is possible to enjoy Grand Cayman without leaving your resort, doing so means missing out on the full beauty and diversity of the island. A rental car is the key to unlocking the best of Grand Cayman.
Once the car is sorted, our 10-day Grand Cayman itinerary is the next piece we would map out.
