Myrtle Beach is one of those destinations that has something for everyone: a lively boardwalk, wide beaches, golf courses everywhere, and enough restaurants to eat somewhere different every night for a week. We have put together our top tips for making the most of a trip there. 1. Where to stay in Myrtle Beach
The area you stay in shapes the whole trip, so it is worth thinking about what kind of vacation you want.
- North Myrtle Beach — quieter, family-friendly atmosphere with wide beaches. Good for a more relaxed stay.
- Central Myrtle Beach — home to the famous boardwalk, amusement parks, and nightlife. Best if you want to be in the middle of everything.
- South Myrtle Beach — a mix of residential and tourist areas with plenty of shopping and dining. A solid middle ground.
Our pick: Embassy Suites Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort. It is part of the Kingston Resorts complex and offers spacious two-room suites with ocean views, complimentary made-to-order breakfasts, and evening receptions. There are multiple pools, a water park, and direct beach access, which makes it easy with kids. The central location puts you close to the boardwalk and Broadway at the Beach without being right on top of the noise.
2. What to pack: avoid paying tourist prices
The same items that save money at any beach destination apply here. A few things are worth tossing in the car or suitcase before you leave.
This is the same basic beach math we use for Hilton Head and for island trips in our Caribbean checked-bag packing list: bring the boring useful stuff from home so you are not buying it at vacation prices.
Backpack cooler
Drinks on the beach is where it is at. On some of our vacations, a couple of cocktails at the beach bar costs as much as one of these backpacks. We saved a lot by packing a few cold beers and seltzers and skipping the markup.

Packable beach chair
Get out of the resort and explore different stretches of beach. Bringing your own packable chair means you can set up anywhere without renting or buying one at tourist prices.

Sun hat
A packable, lightweight, breathable sun hat keeps the sun out of your eyes without making your head too hot. Simple and effective. At the price point for most of these, maybe grab two.

Inflatable pool float hammocks
Perfect for lounging in the calm water or floating in the pool. They pack small, inflate fast, and feel like a luxury that costs almost nothing compared to renting floats at the resort.

3. Plan your itinerary: sample 7-day vacation
Here is a rough week that covers the highlights without overscheduling.
Day 1: Arrival and beach time. Check in, head straight to the beach in front of your hotel. Dinner at Pier 14 Restaurant and Lounge.
Day 2: Explore the boardwalk. Walk the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, ride the SkyWheel for panoramic views, and hit the arcade games and rides at Family Kingdom Amusement Park. Dinner at Sea Captain’s House.
Day 3: Outdoor adventures. Parasailing or jet skiing in the morning. Myrtle Beach State Park for hiking and picnicking in the afternoon. Beach picnic and sunset in the evening.
Day 4: Day trip to Brookgreen Gardens. A short drive to explore the sculpture gardens and zoo. Return to Myrtle Beach for the evening.
Day 5: Golf and mini golf day. Play a round at one of the many golf courses in the morning. Fun round of themed mini golf in the afternoon. Dinner at Aspen Grille.
Day 6: Shopping and entertainment. Broadway at the Beach for shopping and attractions, including Ripley’s Aquarium. Evening show at the Carolina Opry or Alabama Theatre.
Day 7: Relax and reflect. Leisurely breakfast, last beach time, shopping at Coastal Grand Mall, then head home.
Bonus tips
- Book activities in advance. Popular tours fill up fast during peak season.
- Use bike rentals. Myrtle Beach has some great bike trails and cycling is a fun way to explore.
- Check for local events. Festivals, farmers markets, and local events can add something unexpected to the trip.
- Respect wildlife. Be mindful in state parks and natural areas.
- Stay safe. Follow beach safety guidelines and check ocean condition advisories.
Our bottom line
Myrtle Beach is a reliable family destination with enough variety to fill a full week. The key is picking the right area to stay, packing a few things that save money, and leaving room in the schedule for the unplanned moments that end up being the best part.
