Saint Martin beach advice gets confusing because the island has two countries, a lot of beach personalities, and approximately one million opinions from people who are very sure their favorite beach is the only correct answer. With kids, the better question is not “what is the best beach?” It is “what beach matches the day we are actually trying to have?” Some links in this article are Amazon affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission if you buy through them at no extra cost to you.
Our family beach answer is: start with calmer, easier beaches, then add the bigger-personality beaches when everyone has the energy for them.
For broader planning, read our Saint Martin and Sint Maarten quick tips and our SXM checked-bag packing list.
Grand Case is the family-friendly food-and-beach combo
Grand Case is one of the first areas we would look at for a calmer family beach day because it gives you water plus food. That combination matters. A beautiful beach with no easy lunch plan can go from dreamy to “why did we do this?” very quickly.
The beach can be calmer than the bigger Atlantic-side options, and the village has restaurants and lolo-style casual food that make it easier to turn beach time into a full day without packing like you are crossing a desert.
We would choose Grand Case when:
- the family wants calmer water
- lunch matters
- adults want actual food, not just emergency fries
- you want a beach day with some village character
This is the beach day where we would bring snorkel gear but not build the entire plan around snorkeling.

Friar’s Bay often comes up as a good family choice because it is more sheltered and relaxed. It can be a nice alternative when Orient feels like too much and you want a beach that does not require the family to be “on” all day.
We would consider Friar’s when the goal is swimming, sitting, snacking, and letting the day be simple.
Bring sunscreen and do not count on every convenience being perfect. That is a general island rule and also a parenting rule.

Mullet Bay is one of those beaches that people recommend with enthusiasm, and the beach can be absolutely beautiful. With kids, we would check conditions and choose the day carefully.
When it is calm, it can be fantastic. When there is more wave action, younger kids may be less impressed by your confidence.
We would go earlier, bring a simple setup, and avoid turning it into the only plan if the forecast or surf looks questionable. Mullet is a great example of why the “best beach” changes depending on the day.
Orient Beach is fun, not always calm
Orient Beach has energy. Restaurants, water sports, beach clubs, a long stretch of sand, and plenty going on. That can be great with older kids or families who want activity around them.
But if someone asks specifically for calmer water with little kids, Orient is not always our first answer. It can be breezier and more active, and the family should know that before showing up expecting a bathtub.
We would choose Orient for:
- beach clubs
- people-watching
- water sports energy
- a longer, livelier beach day
We would choose Grand Case or Friar’s first for a calmer family swim.
Pinel Island is worth planning, not winging
Pinel Island can be a highlight because it feels like a little adventure without being an all-day expedition. You take a short boat/ferry from Cul-de-Sac, spend time in shallow water, eat, and enjoy the “we left the main island” feeling.
The key is planning. Check current ferry/boat timing, bring what you need, and do not assume you can improvise endlessly with kids. Small outings become harder when someone is tired, sandy, and asking why the boat is not here yet.
We would bring:
- water
- sunscreen
- hats
- simple snacks
- snorkel gear if your family uses it
- cash/card depending on current vendor setup
What about St. Barts or Anguilla?
Day trips to St. Barts or Anguilla can be amazing, but they are not the same as picking a calmer SXM beach. They involve ferry timing, passports, seasickness potential, and a longer day.
We would only do a ferry day if the family handles logistics well and everyone understands it is a real outing. For many first trips, we would rather have a great Saint Martin beach day than turn the week into a ferry checklist.
Our calm-water family beach shortlist
For Saint Martin/Sint Maarten with kids, we would start here:
- Grand Case for calmer water plus food.
- Friar’s Bay for a quieter reset.
- Mullet Bay when conditions are calm and you want gorgeous water.
- Pinel Island for a planned little adventure.
- Orient Beach when the family wants energy and services more than calm.
The best SXM beach is the one that fits your actual day. If everyone is rested and excited, go bigger. If the family is one missed snack from collapse, choose easy water and food. That is not settling. That is wisdom in flip-flops.
